Light And Shadow Photography On Boxing Day

In the winter sun shoppers looking for a Boxing Day sale bargain cast shadows onto the street in Chichester, West Sussex, UK.

As shoppers rushed around looking for a bargain in the Boxing Day sales I joined them camera in hand through the streets of Chichester in West Sussex to create my photographs.

In all the commotion and excitement it was easy for me to get overlooked. I could disappear into the shadows. Watching, waiting, looking as both young and old walked by. And as I observed every now and again all fell into place. The light, the shadows, the people for one split second, as if by magic, all worked together. It was almost as if they had been dancing around, teasing one another but then had given in. Succumb to the moment. For one brief second they decided to work together, just long enough for me to create my photograph. And then as if embarrassed they dispersed and went their separate ways. Gone until another time.

"There are infinite shadings of light and shadows and colors... it's an extraordinarily subtle language. Figuring out how to speak that language is a lifetime job." Quote by cinematographer Conrad Hall
