Pedal In Preston Park Velodrome Brighton
Preston Park Velodrome in Brighton is the oldest cycle track in the UK and was built in 1877. I was surprised when I first heard about it as I have covered many photo assignments in Brighton over the years but for some reason never heard of the track. Researching it further and discovering its history I soon decided that it would make a great photo project. I wanted to create a set of photos that showed the people that regularly use the track and so to start things off I visited the site in late October. An annual charity cycling event called 'Pedal In Preston Park' (Please take the time to visit their website) was being held at the track and I thought it would be an ideal starting point for the project. Each year a determined group of cyclists gather together for the event to raise money for The Martlets Hospice and the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Attracting cyclists of all ages the event raises money for a great cause and along with being able to create some photographs and make new contacts I also wanted to lend my support. I'll be visiting the track over the next year and hopefully meet some more interesting people like Stacey, who had travelled down from Crawley to take part in the event (You can see his portrait photo that I took here).
If you use the track I would love to hear from you, contact Scott. Till next time and don't forget even when the head wind is strong and the going gets tough pedal on, pedal on till the goal is won! Scott the photographer.
