The Burning The Clocks Winter Solstice Parade In Brighton

Burning  The Clocks Brighton - Paper lanterns are paraded past the Brighton Wheel on Maderia Drive in Brighton East Sussex.

Each year the Winter Solstice is celebrated in a unique way in Brighton, East Sussex. On the shortest day of the year (December the 21st) the city is filled with light and its residents are roused from their winter slumber as lanterns are paraded through the streets. Accompanied by loud drumming and whistles being blown the Burning The Clocks event awakens the darkest of winter nights. This community event, which started in 1994, was created by Same Sky for people of all faiths to celebrate Christmas in a non commercial way. The parade starts in the centre of Brighton and winds its way down through the Lanes (a famous shopping district of the city) and then onto the seafront, past Brighton Pier and onto Maderia Drive. The lanterns are thrown onto a large bonfire which once alight signals the start of the fireworks display which lights up the entire sky. A really great event and one not to missed.

More information about this year's event can be found at the Same Sky website here. Till next time Scott the Photographer.
